Make Your Own Hobby Horse (Easy Kids’ Craft Using a Kitchen Roll Tube!)

Looking for a fun, creative activity your child will LOVE this weekend?

This week’s Crafty Sundays project is a classic with a Creative Crafters twist — a DIY Hobby Horse! 🐎✨

It’s brilliant for:

🎨 Creativity

✂️ Fine motor skills

🧠 Imagination & storytelling

🏃 Gross motor play (once it’s finished — riding time!)

And best of all… it’s made using simple household items.

What You’ll Need

  • A kitchen roll tube (or 2 toilet rolls taped together)

  • Our FREE printable horse head (download below)

  • Thick paper or card

  • Scissors

  • Glue

  • Colouring pens, pencils or paint

  • Wool, ribbon, string or paper strips (for the mane)

  • Stickers or decorations (optional)

    Download the Horse Head Printable

Instead of drawing the horse head, you can download and print our ready-made template — perfect for saving time and keeping it child-friendly.

How To Make Your Hobby Horse

1️⃣ Decorate the Tube

Let your child colour or paint their kitchen roll tube — stripes, patterns, rainbows, glitter… anything goes!

2️⃣ Cut & Colour the Horse Head

  • Print the horse head

  • Glue it onto card

  • Cut it out

  • Decorate both sides with faces, spots, stars or silly expressions

3️⃣ Add Ears & Eyes

Cut ears from paper or card and glue them on — or let children design their own fun features.

4️⃣ Create the Mane

Stick wool, ribbon, paper strips or string along the back of the head to make a flowy mane.

5️⃣ Attach the Head to the Tube

Cut small slits in the tube, slide the horse head in, and secure with tape

or glue.

6️⃣ Ride Your Horse! 🏇

Time for imaginative play — galloping, racing, storytelling and showing off their creation!
