Make a Fire-Breathing Dragon for Chinese New Year
Welcome to Crafty Sundays ā our weekly creative series sharing fun, simple crafts families can enjoy at home š
This weekās make is inspired by Chinese New Year and our iconic Welsh Dragon ā a fiery recycled craft using an egg carton and lots of imagination.
This is the same dragon craft weāre making in our after-school clubs and holiday clubs, so children can recreate the magic at home too š²

What Youāll Need
1 egg carton cup (or section of an egg box)
Red paint
Paintbrush
Googly eyes (or drawn eyes)
Red / orange / yellow paper (for fire breath)
Green or red paper (for spikes / scales)
Glue
Scissors
Black marker
Optional: glitter, sequins, gold pens
Adult Prep Tip ā 3D Dragon Eyes
For extra impact, you can create raised dragon eyes:
Cut two small egg cups from a second egg tray
Turn them sideways to create eye shapes
Glue-gun them onto the top or side of the dragonās head
Painting over them red gives a bold 3D effect
Gluing slightly to the side often looks best and adds character.
How To Make Your Dragon
Paint the Head
Paint the egg carton cup bright red and leave to dry.
Add Eyes & Face
Stick on googly eyes or paint your own.Add nostrils, teeth, or a fierce/friendly expression.
Add Fire Breath
Cut flame shapes from coloured paper and glue inside the mouth.
Add Spikes or Wings
Cut triangles or zig-zag shapes and glue along the back for scales or wings.
Add Sparkle
Glitter, stickers, gold details ā let children personalise their dragon.
