Learning Through Play: Why Play Is the Most Powerful Way Children Learn

When people think of learning, they often imagine children sitting at a table, completing worksheets or practising letters and numbers. While these activities certainly have their place, research consistently shows that play is one of the most effective ways children learn and develop (Bruce, 2011; Welsh Government, 2024).
Through play, children aren't simply having fun—they are building confidence, solving problems, developing friendships and learning skills that will benefit them throughout their lives (Lester and Russell, 2010).
What Is Learning Through Play?
Learning through play is an approach where children develop new knowledge, skills and understanding through hands-on experiences, exploration and curiosity. Instead of being told exactly what to do, children are encouraged to investigate, experiment, create and discover (Piaget, 1952; Vygotsky, 1978).
Whether a child is building a tower, making slime, creating a painting or pretending to run a café, they are developing important life skills without even realising it.
Why Is Play So Important?

Play supports every area of a child's development, including:
🧠 Cognitive Development
Children learn to think critically, solve problems, remember information and make decisions. Activities such as construction, puzzles and STEAM challenges encourage children to test ideas, adapt their thinking and persevere when something doesn't work the first time (Piaget, 1952).
💬 Communication and Language
Whether children are negotiating roles in imaginary play, explaining their artwork or chatting while building together, play naturally develops vocabulary, listening skills and confidence in communication (Vygotsky, 1978).
❤️ Emotional Wellbeing
Play gives children the opportunity to express feelings, manage emotions and develop resilience. It allows them to explore different situations in a safe environment and build confidence through achievement (Lester and Russell, 2010).
🤝 Social Skills
Working together on creative projects teaches children how to cooperate, share ideas, solve disagreements and appreciate different perspectives. These are essential skills for school and later life (Whitebread et al., 2012).
✋ Physical Development
Creative activities strengthen fine motor skills through cutting, painting, threading beads and modelling clay, while outdoor play develops balance, coordination, strength and overall physical health (Bruce, 2011).
Creativity Builds Confidence
One of the greatest benefits of learning through play is that there are often no right or wrong answers.
When children are free to explore their own ideas, they learn to take risks, experiment and become confident problem-solvers. A cardboard box might become a castle, a spaceship or a pirate ship depending on a child's imagination. Open-ended play encourages creativity because children are free to make decisions and explore possibilities without fear of getting the "wrong" answer (Craft, 2002; Nicholson, 1971).
This type of creative thinking is increasingly recognised as an important life skill for the future.
What Does Learning Through Play Look Like?

Learning through play can happen almost anywhere.
Children might be:
Creating artwork using recycled materials.
Building bridges from LEGO or wooden blocks.
Mixing ingredients to make slime or bath bombs.
Designing and flying paper aeroplanes.
Hunting for bugs and exploring nature.
Acting out stories with puppets.
Cooking simple recipes together.
Building dens outdoors.
Creating imaginary worlds from cardboard boxes.
Although these activities appear to be "just play", children are developing communication, science, maths, engineering, creativity and resilience all at the same time (Bruce, 2011; Welsh Government, 2024).
The Role of Adults
Adults don't always need to lead play. Often, the best learning happens when adults provide inspiring resources, ask open-ended questions and allow children to take ownership of their ideas. Rather than directing every activity, practitioners and parents can support children's thinking by observing, listening and responding to their interests (Bruce, 2011).
Simple questions such as:
"What do you think will happen?"
"How could we make that stronger?"
"Can you think of another way?"
"What would happen if...?"
encourage deeper thinking without taking over the activity.

Final Thoughts
Play isn't a break from learning—it is learning. As recognised in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, every child has the right to play, and those opportunities are fundamental to healthy development and wellbeing (United Nations, 1989).
By providing children with opportunities to explore, create and discover, we help them build the confidence, skills and resilience they need both now and in the future. Whether at home, in school or at a holiday club, every playful experience has the potential to inspire a lifelong love of learning.
